Russian Telegram watch

A daily read of Russian military bloggers, official channels and regional channels from Murmansk to Kaliningrad. It looks for early signs of unit movements, losses and mobilisation, and follows how Denmark and the Nordic countries are portrayed.

The question

Telegram is where Russia’s war is discussed most openly in Russian. Military bloggers report from the front, official channels set the line, and regional channels carry local news that national media leave out. This project asks what these channels reveal, earlier than other sources, about Russian forces on NATO’s northern and eastern flank, and how they portray Denmark and the Nordic countries.

Why it matters

Signs of unit movements, losses or a new round of mobilisation often appear first as local detail, such as a recruitment drive, a notice from a regional authority or a convoy filmed from the roadside. Narratives matter as well. How Russian channels talk about Greenland, the Danish straits or the inspection of shadow fleet tankers shows which Danish decisions Moscow notices, and how it presents them to a Russian audience.

Approach

A fixed set of channels in three groups is read daily in Russian. The first group is military bloggers, the second official and state media channels, and the third regional channels from the Murmansk, Leningrad, Pskov and Kaliningrad regions. Each relevant item is entered in a collection log and graded for the reliability of the source and the credibility of the information, following the grading used in NATO intelligence practice. Items are then matched against a list of indicators defined in advance. The project records patterns and counts, not private individuals.

What the full analysis will contain

  • The indicators observed over the period, and what they suggest about Russian forces near the flank.
  • The main narratives about Denmark and the Nordic countries, with examples translated from Russian.
  • The changes since the previous period, with a source grading for every item cited.
